Project Management

Project 1 : Defining and Documenting a Project

In a group of six members, we are tasked to design and manage a simple construction project in a way that emphasizes cost, quality or time, with a measurable ‘success criteria’.

 

In our chosen groups, we are to perform the following:

 

1) Establish a fictional Project Management Company (PMC), with a NAME, clear ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE and ORGANIZATIONAL TYPE.

2) Understand the requirements needed by the Client, their objectives and corporate mission.

3) Design recreational and operational facilities, advising on the pros and cons of your proposal concerning the site location and conditions.

4) Identify the strategic planning and the criteria for the space allocations including appropriate facilities to be provided,street furniture and suitability of materials for the project assuming a diversified type of users.

5) Produce a design analysis, success criteria, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt chart documenting the timeline for your project.

6) Produce relevant 2D & 3D drawings to explain the project.Models are not required.

7) Ensure that the running cost of your finished project is lower than that of a standard building.

8) Provide 1 suitable case study for your project to derive from as precedent studies.

 

 

PROJECT DETAILS 

RECREATIONAL STATION

 

Taylor’s Management has approached our project management company with an idea of a ‘Recreational Station’. A building that will house students’ recreational activities both indoors and outdoors. The ‘Recreation Station’ will be used during the upcoming Architectural Workshop to be held at the University compound in August 2018. As such, it needs to be carefully planned and implemented to its completion before August 2018. In order not to interfere with the campus activities during the semester, a proper project management plan has to prepared. There are 3 potential sites identified and the final selection will be decided by the Management based on the design suitability, method of construction, implementation strategy and any extra features that would give an added value to the place.

Project 2: Documentation of a Medium Sized Project

This is an individual project. We are to document our own Design Studio Project from the point of view of a Project Manager. Document (Written report, annotated visual images) will be in 5 main Components in total:

 

1. Introduction of Project (Identifying clients, stakeholders, objectives and goals).

2. Design Analysis, picking up issues of Design Suitability and Project Viability and specifically related to your design. (Note: This is to be in essay format, schematic diagrams, sketches and drawing where necessary).

3. Project Procurement and Resource Planning (to identify the most suitable contract procurement for the project and planning of resources, organization structures to achieve project deliverables)

4. Risk Analysis, and Maintenance Strategy (to achieve the identified success criteria and project deliverables). This must be in a table format.

5. Success Criteria, WBS, Gantt chart (showing the measurable success criteria for the overall implementation strategy, analysis of critical paths, floats plotted against time). This chart will highlight Project Deliverables.

6. Students are required to perform their own research and study on the mentioned components.
