Building Structure

Project 1 : Roof Truss

The module covers principles of selecting appropriate structural systems and designing elements and structures, an introduction to structural analysis, deflections, structural design as well as the application of structural design codes including loading codes.

Objectives & Learning Outcomes

  • To develop student’s understanding on the potential of truss system in their design.

  • To develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss

  • To design a roof truss which fulfils the following criterias :  High aesthetic value
                                                                                                             Minimal construction materiel

  • Explore and apply understanding of load distribution in a truss

  • Able to evaluate and identify tension and compression members in a truss structure

  • Explore different arrangement of members in a truss structure

As a group of five, we were required to choose the design from Design Studio 3 of one of our member and identify the suitable roof truss system for it. We were required to produce an analytical board and model to explain the system we are going to include.

Project 2: Structure Analysis of a Bungalow

The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of building structure. This project divided into 2 parts- group and individual.

Objectives & Learning Outcomes

  • To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.

  • To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout Design, Building Structure Engineering Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and Calculations, Final Report and Presentation.

  • Produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study

  • Explore and understand the concept of structural analysis

  • Identification of structural components

  • Recognize, Execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design

  • Produce a structural proposal

As a group of three, we were required to design a bungalow from a variety of grids given by the lecturers. After that, we were required to locate the columns, beams and other structural elements into the appropriate locations and finish load distribution calculations.
